In 2022 we earned our USDA Organic certification. We put in the hours, filled out every form, paid every fee, and passed. Then we started reading the fine print. The government certification allows conventional seeds in certain situations. It permits specific synthetic fertilizers under certain conditions. For most farms, that is good enough. For our family, it was a dealbreaker. ๐ŸŒฟ

So we raised our own bar higher than the certification requires and chose not to renew. This is not a cost-cutting decision. If we spent the hours on the paperwork and paid the fee tomorrow, we would have it back, because we never stopped growing organically. We actually grow stricter than organic. We heavily filter and sanitize our water to a level we set ourselves. Every seed is organic. Every soil blend is petroleum-free. Every container is biodegradable. No exceptions. Ever.

This is not something we turn on when we walk into the grow room and turn off when we leave. Our family skips snacks and treats we would love to eat because they are not organic, or at the very least GMO-free and synthetic-free. Our kids know the difference.
